  5. Red-winged Blackbird. Among our most familiar birds, Red-wings seem to sing their nasal songs in every marsh and wet field from coast to coast. They are notably bold, and several will often attack a larger bird, such as a hawk or crow, that flies over their nesting area.
  6. Songs. The male Red-winged Blackbird’s conk-la-ree! is a classic sound of wetlands across the continent. The 1-second song starts with an abrupt note that turns into a musical trill. Males often sing from a high perch while leaning forward, drooping their wings, spreading their tail feathers, and fluffing their bright shoulder patches to show them off.
  7. Where the Red-winged Blackbirds Sing Let the plaintive sound of a steam train's whistle, the moan of the lonesome prairie wind, red-winged black birds reverie and the cottonwood country's courting song take you on a musical journey.
  8. The male birds, named for their prominent field marks, are unmistakable, but female birds are far more camouflaged and difficult to discern. By learning the key clues to identify red-winged blackbirds, birders will never again be embarrassed to mistake one of these Icteridae birds for a sparrow, cowbird, grackle or other similar species.
  9. Red-winged blackbirds communicate both vocally and visually. In the eastern region of the USA, the male birds would utter their common song of “oak-a-lee” or “konkeree” in the spring. Pre-mating calls are a set of noises that sound like “ti-ti-ti,” which may be uttered by both the sexes.
